About Salomon Curiel
Selomoh Curiel (alias Manoel Nunes da Costa; ?-1679) was the son of Jacob Curiel (alias Duarte Nunes da Costa) and Lea Abas. The family of wealthy New Christian merchants, Nunes da Costa (or Curiel), amassed much of their fortune as tax collectors during the term of the Count-Duke of Olivares in Madrid (1621-1643). After being persecuted by the Inquisition on the Iberian Peninsula, several of their members would go on to play a crucial role as leaders and pioneers in the newly formed Portuguese communities in Western Europe, particularly in Amsterdam and Hamburg.
