From Edward Ayton Innes - The story goes - Salomon FERREIRA and Mimi [Maria Susanna Elizabeth Petronella COETSEE] had a farm in George where he (Salomon) bred race horses and Ostriches. Salomon stood surety for a friend (an Englishman) and subsequently lost everything after this friend committed suicide. About 1890 he obtained two ox wagons and donkeys and left for the interior. Mimi was 3 months pregnant and he took his mother in law with to look after her. It took 9 months to travel to the Transvaal, where the finally ended up. They stopped at Norvals Pont (outside Colesburg) for a time - John Norval was one of Mimi's uncles. Here Salomon planted maize and wheat and when it was ready, John Norval reaped it and sent the proceeds on to them. For a time the Ferreira family lived in Welgedacht (in Swaziland). A Royal Swazi family were their nearest Neighbours and they supplied food to Salomon in return for his top hat, tail coat, pants and shoes which the Swazi King would wear. The jacket he could just get on - the pants would not fasten, the hat he would wear grandly, but the shoes were only put on show and not worn (he probable couldn't get them on!! ). They left Swaziland they were destitute and trekked inland again stopping over in Nigel where they were given food by a kindly old farmer who had no children of his own. Finally stopped at Schuurpoort, (possible in the area covered by the Hartebeespoort Dam) near Pretoria where Salomon opened a little shop. Saloman used to go out in his wagon to collect rocks to build the Groote Kerk in Pretoria where he was a elder. The Ferreira family eventually landed in Krugersdorp where they had a little house in 53 Dingaan Street. (Now Kobie Krige Street). The Boer war broke out and one day Salomon (who was doing veterinary duties) was caught returning home from Vereeniging after curfew. Kitchener, Horatio Herbert, who associated Salomon Ferreira with the doings of his cousin, (who rode out with a Boer Commando) had him arrested and he was sent to Ceylon for 5 years. He was sent to the Himalayas (to the Gurkhas) before returning home. He was away for approx 7 years. That's the little I got from Colleen Crossman, Cornelia Ferriera's grand-daughter who unfortunately died of cancer a few years ago. I saw the photo of the swazi king and Salomon, unfortunately didn't get a copy. The farm with the race horses was in the langkloof area between the 2 brak rivers.
