Salomon Tugendhat

Salomon Tugendhat (1818 - 1890) –merchant and social activist from Bielsko.

He was trained to become a clothier and on 27 May 1839 in Paskov in Moravia he obtained the qualification. Later, he found employment in Biała at the Bernard Fuchs company specialising in trade and transport services. He took part in the Spring of Nations as a member of the Folk’s Guard (Gwardia Ludowa) in Bielsko. He was promoted to the position of a textile guild master, but he remained involved in commerce. In 1863 he registered his own trade company which dealt with the distribution of assorted goods, mainly wool and textiles. He was one of the three major figures of the Association of the Jewish Confessional Community in Bielsko, and one of the most prominent Jews in town in the period when the Jewish Qahal was operating without the official consent of municipal authorities. In the years 1863-1865 he was one of the initiators of the Jewish Confessional Community in Bielsko (1865). In the years 1865-1870 he was holding the position of the Community Board Vice-Chairman. He was the representative of Bielsko Jews in the Municipal Council between 1867 and 1890. He also became the Vice-Chairman of the Jewish Association of Crafts in Bielsko and an active member of many commercial organisations. He was twice married: with Ernestine Binder and with Pauline Goldschmidt.
