THE WICHITA DAILY EAGLE: TUESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 25, 1890: Mother and Son Burned to Death//Salina, Kansas: February 24:Mrs. Samantha Baker,a widow lady, and her son, eight years old, were yesterday burned to a crisp in their stable on a farm three miles west of Brookville.From the indicatons found they went to the stable Friday with a lantern, from which the stable caught fire.Singularly, the horses had gotten out,but the mother and son perished. Samantha S. Baker and her son Henry C. Baker died Feb. 1890 3 miles west of Brookville Kansas; they were murdered and their bodies burned in their stable. She was a sister of Thomas J. Nichols. They are buried at Brookville with Eddie and her mother.
Recently purchased at a auction by a member of the Smokey Hill Genealogy member was the bible of Samantha S. Nichols Baker.The following information is in this bible: Alfred S. Baker married Samantha A. Nichols on May 18th, 1879 Alfred was born April 10, 1846 Samantha was born May 18, 1845 (the writing is hard to read) Born: Eddie Baker March 2, 1880 Born: Henry C. Baker March 6, 1882 Deaths: Eddie June 28, 1880 Alfred S. died April 3, 1886
