Being a veteran of the War of 1812, Sampson was no stranger to the military but his age would not permit a lengthy service. He is listed as absent & sick on April 30, 1863 and there are no further records for his service available. Sampson was a son of Peter Zickafoose & Catherine Hull (Hohl). His paternal grandfather was Johann Ziegenfuss. His maternal grandparents were Peter Thomas Hull & Susanna Diffenbach.
