Abraham. «/b» Mr. Samuel Victor Abraham died last Friday in a London nursing home, in his 93rd year. Mr. Abraham, a son of the late Mr. Victor Abraham was born on July 11, 1827, in Lancaster Court, Strand, and thus lived in the reigns of five English sovereigns. His mother was Ms. Rebecca Levy of Deal, whose sister was grandmother of Sir Sidney «b»Lee«/b». Mr. Victor Abraham was for many years, a Warden of the Western Synagogue, formally in the Haymarket. The active interest in the synagogue was maintained by Mr. S. V. Abraham, who first took office in «b»1846«/b», until a few years ago. In later years, Mr. Abraham was a member of the Board of Management of the New West End Synagogue. He also served on the Deputies of British Jews, and on other Jewish bodies. In business life, Mr. Abraham, like his father before him, was an expert in embroidery and decoration, the business having been established in Denmark Court, Strand, in the early part of the eighteenth century. The firm ultimately migrated in the year «b»1837«/b» to Lisle Street, Leicester Square, and had the honour of embroidering the cover for the throne used at Queen Victoria's Coronation. Mr. Abraham himself had many specimens of his work on the Scrolls of the Law and the Ark curtains of many synagogues in England and the Colonies. The fine curtain hung in front of the Ark at the new West End Synagogue on the Day of Atonement was his handiwork. Specimens of his work were also on view at the Exhibition of 18«b»???«/b»1. The «i»Graphic«/i» in 1875 reproduced a photograph of the gold embroidered curtain of the Ark used at the opening of The Prince's Road Synagogue in Liverpool. Mr. Abraham was a prominent figure in Freemasonry. He was initiated in the Joppa Lodge, about 65 years ago, was one of the founders of Monteflore Lodge in the year «b»1862«/b», served as its Worshipful Master, three times, the last occasion being in 1882, and Treasurer for many years, and was entertained by the Lodge when he celebrated his jubilee in the Craft. He was appointed Assistant Grand Pursuivant in the Grand Lodge of England in 1891, and Grand Pursuivant in 1892. He was also a founder and the first M.E.Z. of Monteflore chapter in 1889, and was appointed A.G.D.C. of the Grand Chapter of England in 1893. Mr. Abraham was also P.M. and P.C. of Joppa Lodge and Chapter. Mr. Abraham lived in retirement with his nephew, Mr. Herbert Abraham, at 149 Sutherland Avenue. His late wife was a Miss Van Noorden, aunt of Mr. Alfred Van Noorden, a Director of the Royal Carl Rosa Opera Company. Mr. Abraham leaves a son, Mr. Victor Abraham, and daughters.
