Samuel Bassett was born on 4 Feb 1693 in Chilmark, Massachusetts Bay to Nathan Bassett and Mary (Huckins) Bassett. He was styled "gentleman" and held many public offices including deputy sheriff.


Samuel was a blacksmith who held many public offices in Edgartown including deputy sheriff. He also owned large tracts of land in Edgartown and Chilmark. He was known to be one of the wealthiest men on the island.
