About Samuel Irwin Casady
Elizabeth Moore Winning raised Samuel, her sister Clarissa was his mother, don't know if she married his father.
Samuel I. Casady, an old and highly respected citizen of Somerset, died at his home last Friday evening [January 30, 1903] at 9 o’clock of abscese of the brain. He had been sick since December 16th.
Mr. Casady was born in West Virginia [should be Ohio] in 1848, and came to this county when a mere boy. He married Elizabeth Jane Turnipseed, and to them were born 11 children, ten of whom with the widow survive.
He was a member of the 34th Iowa during the Civil War and has since been an honorable and upright citizen. He was a member of the Baptist Church and the funeral occurred from the church of that faith at Somerset Sunday, the funeral sermon being preached by Rev. Geo. Jones of Des Moines.
The remains were interred in the Scotch Ridge Cemetery, and were followed from the church to the grave by a large number of friends and sympathetic friends. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the services at the grave were in charge of his fraternal brothers.

SOMERSET. We are called upon this week to chronicle the death of our fellow citizen, S.I. Casady. When the news went out last Saturday morning that Mr. Casady had passed away the preceding evening, a gloom settled down over the little community. For over fifty years he has been a citizen of Warren County and has spent most of his life in this vicinity. At his country’s call he went out in the Rebellion as a member of the 34th Iowa Infantry to defend the flag.
A man of sterling qualities, he was held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact. His circle of friends was large. He had, notwithstanding many adverse circumstances, built a comfortable home for his family for whom he manifested the most tender devotion. He was a member of the Odd Fellow and Woodmen lodges, the latter having charge of the funeral service held at the Baptist Church last Sunday at one o’clock, sermon preached by Rev. Jones, pastor of the Baptist Church here. He was laid to rest in Scotch Ridge Cemetery.
