Notes

Colonial Families appears to be in error that Samuel Clayton & Susannah of Gloucester & Essex Cos. VA are the parents of Samuel, father of Philip who m. Elizabeth Pendleton.

According to tradition, Samuel was a son of the Attorney-general, John Clayton of Virginia

It has been reported that Samuel Clayton was born in Abingdon Parish. This is unlikely, since Gloucester County was not settled until 1644, after he was born.
