About Samuel Macroy Cleveland
"Hippie" of his day. Made moonshine in mountains.
When Sam Cleveland died, Hopewell Baptist Church in Seneca, SC, would not allow him to be buried in the church cemetary. So, his brother in law, Hardy Gilstrap, purchased a small house with a yard adjacent to the church yard and had his brother in law, Ben buried there. Ben's grave is now part of the church cemetary.
He had a common law wife that he lived with up in the mountains. They came down on a buck board or horse and buggy to visit his mother. His common law wife wore trousers for the visit and the Cleveland family was shocked.
He also had a daughter, name unknown, who was found dead on the streets of Greenville, SC. Unknown cause. But at the time she was found, she had an engagement ring on.
