Samuel Couillard, Jr. of Boston, MA was a machinist who patentented multiple inventions, including U.S. Patent No. 57 for a hemp and flax roving machine in October 19, 1836, a patent for a machine for combing woll and separating the longer from the shorter fibers on July 7, 1835, which was re-issued as U.S. Patent Reissue No. 9 on July 6, 1839. In addition he recieved patents No's 4817X and 4889X for printing presses, No. 6,184X for wiping and polishing the exterior surface of punched, etched, or engraved plates, 7,501X for a machine for clearing wool of burs and 8,952X for a spinner..

John Goulding of Dedham had received several patents in the late 1820’s, Samuel Couillard, Jr. of Boston received patents in the early 1830’s, and in the late 1830’s work was going on in Lowell as well...
He [Michael Hodge Simpson] had established his own mill (the Simpson Worsted Mill, location unknown but perhaps Roxbury) and with his mechanics, improved on Couillard’s patent so that when it removed the burrs it did not cut the staple (fibers)."
