Samuel Leonard Crocker, Jr., A.M.

Samuel Leonard Crocker, Jr., of Taunton, for many years a resident of Naples, Italy, died suddenly in front of the Royal Palace in Naples on May 27, 1904.

He was the only son of the Hon. Samuel Leonard and Caroline (Thomas) Crocker of Taunton, and was born May 25, 1835. He was a descendant of the Reverend Josiah Crocker, the sixth minister of Taunton, who died Aug. 28, 1774, and traced his ancestry to William Crocker, a settler of Scituate in 1636, and later of Barnstable.

He was fitted for college at Bristol Academy, was graduated at Brown University in the Class of 1856, and at the Harvard Law School in 1859, and for a few years was engaged in the practice of his profession in Boston.

He visited Europe for the first time in 1857, traveled extensively in foreign lands for many successive seasons, made more than 50 passages across the Atlantic, and spent 20 years of his life in Italy. Though residing far from the scenes of his early manhood, he retained his affection for his native country.

He returned to Massachusetts, accompanied by his family, in 1901, and became a resident and householder of Taunton.

He was a man of varied acquirements, scholarly tastes, and literary ability, which were illustrated in his occasional public addresses.

He was the author of a "Eulogy upon the character and services of Abraham Lincoln, late President of the United States, delivered by invitation of the authorities of the City of Taunton on the occasion of the National Fast, June 1, 1865."

He contributed to the archives of the Old Colony Historical Society, of which he became a member in 1864.

He was a brother of

  • Mrs. Mary Caroline Couch
  • Mrs. Sally Crocker Bennett, and
  • Ellen Louisa Crocker.

He married, May 25, 1885, a member of a Neopolitan family, who survives his husband.

The children of this union are:

  • Alice Leavenworth Crocker, born Sept. 25, 1886
  • Samuel Leonard Crocker, born July 21, 1888.
