MOUNT MORIAH

Samuel Crockett donated the land at this location to be used for a meeting house and burying ground to be shared equally between the Methodist and Cumberland Presbyterians. This site lies on what was Samuel's farm along a bluff above the Hinkston Creek and was once the site of many "brush arbor" meetings. In a deed dated 18 May 1835, Samuel Crockett deeded to the Trustees, Michael Robinson, Thomas Callahan, William Rowland, and Elijah Wright.

"One certain lot of ground on which the foresaid meeting house now stands bounded as follows: beginning at a stone from which a white oak 24 inches in diameter bears N40E 8 links a white oak 24 inches in diameter bears S55E. Thence East 8 1/2 poles to a stone in the line between Samuel Crockett and Charles McClains surveys. Thence North with said line North 28 poles to a stone. Thence West 8 1/2 poles to a stone. Thence South 28 poles to the beginning containing one acre and a half of ground more or less."
