"Samuel started the DAY migration westward when he moved from New Jersey to Washington County, Pennsylvania around 1818 between the births of his last two children, Sarah and Stephen. He had moved again by 1835 to Lodi Twp., Athens Co., Ohio, where land records indicate he purchased 262 acres.

Text taken from page 1186 of: Beers, J. H. and Company, Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, Pennsylvania.

From Bio of Elias D. Owen: Samuel Day, who was born in New Jersey, and there married Sophia Hayden, who bore him twenty-one children, eighteen of whom lived to maturity and raised families. In 1831 the family of Samuel Day had a reunion, there being present seventy-five representatives. He joined the Presbyterian Church early in life; but when the Cumberland Presbyterians organized here in 1831, he joined the congregation of that church at Old Concord, becoming an active member thereof and serving as elder for several years. He then moved to Athens, Ohio, with the intention of having a Cumberland Presbyterian Church organized there, which he soon succeeded in accomplishing. He died sometime afterward in the triumph of a living faith.

Samuel Day was born on December 4, 1775 in Chathom in Morris County, New Jersey. He was the son of Nehemiah Day and Phebe Loree. Sophia Hayden was born on March 25, 1780 in Morris County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Jonathon Hayden and Mary VanWinkle. Samuel and Sophia were married on May 29, 1796 in Mendham in Morris County, New Jersey. In 1797 Sophia gave birth to a set of twins, a boy who was still born and a little girl named Eleanor S Day who died the day she was born. They started their family with the birth of Daniel Day in 1798.

Their family exploded through the 1800's with the births of Mary D Day and Phebe day (another set of twins) in 1800. I could find no record of Mary after her birth so it is possible she died as an infant. Another set of twins, Elias and Eliza Day, were born in 1802, both twins survived. Nancy Hunter Day was born in 1804, Alice Sutton Day in 1805, Israel Day in 1806, Susannah Rush Day in 1807, and a final set of twins, Keziah and Sophia Day in 1808. Unfortunately Sophia died at four months old.

Samuel and Sophia's family continued to grow at a rapid rate through the 1810's with the births of Samuel Day Jr. in 1810, Hannah Hudson Day in 1811, Charles Mullen Day in 1813, James Day in 1814, Charlotte Day in 1816, Sarah Venosdal Day in 1818 and Stephen Day in 1819. In 1819 Samuel moved his large family to Greene Township in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Around 1818 Phebe Day married Ziba Winget in Morris in Greene County, Pennsylvania.

On February 13, 1823 Daniel Day married Elizabeth Ault and they started their family with the births of John and Mary Day in 1824 (don't know if these were twins, but it seems likely), Susan Ann Day in 1825 and Barbara Day in 1827. Phebe and Ziba Winget started their family with the births of Ruth and Martha Winget in 1820, Mary Ann and Rachel Winget in 1822, Sophia Winget in 1825, Amzi Winget in 1826, Ziba Winget Jr. in 1828 and Charity Winget in 1829. (Obviously twins run in the family). In 1826 Eliza Day married Charity Yeater and they started their family with the births of Daniel Day in 1829 and Calvin Day in 1829. On September 29, 1829 Nancy Day married Josiah Day Minton in Knox County, Ohio. In 1823 Alice Sutton Day married Robert Henry Hill and they started their family with the births of Sophia Hill in 1825, Priscilla Hill in 1826 and Robert Hill in 1829. In 1829 Israel Day married Barbara Yeater in Pennsylvania.

By 1835 the Day family had moved to Athens County, Ohio where they set up house. Samuel bought 262 acres in September of 1835 and then sold them again on September 24, 1836 to his son-in-law, Smith C Allen. Smith C Allen married Keziah Day on October 8, 1832 in Knox County, Ohio. They started their family with the births of Susan Allen in 1833, Mary Jane Allen in 1834, Sarah Allen in 1836, Jacob Brown Allen in 1837 and Caroline and Emmeline Allen in 1839. Daniel and Elizabeth Day's family grew rapidly with the births of Ferdanand Day in 1830, Mary Ann Day in 1833, and Daniel Day in 1835, Elizabeth Ellen Day in 1837 and they had a son who died in birth in 1838. Daniel died on October 18, 1845 in Monroe in Greene County, Wisconsin at the age of 46 for reasons unknown at this time. Phebe and Ziba Winget had their last child, Phebe Winget, in 1843. The 1850's found Sophia living with her son Samuel and his family in Van Buren County, Iowa where Samuel worked as a Cooper (barrel maker) to make a living and farmer. His real estate was valued at $200.
