About Samuel Elia Waiwaiole

EULOGY as delivered at his memorial services by his good friend's son-in-law:

Born on September 30, 1930, in Kapa'a, Kaua'i to the late Mr. and Mrs. Elia Waiwaiole. He was then blessed on November 16, 1930 by Castle Murphy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was baptized on March 11, 1939 by Elder Anderson and confirmed as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was also ordained a Deacon on October 10, 1943. He becamed ordained as a teacher in the Aaronic priesthood on December 25, 1949. On May 14, 1950 he then became a priest.

In 1944, he met Roland Kula who was from Kaua'i. At that time, they were living in Hickam Housing. Uncle Sam was living with his Uncle Eugene, Aunty Josephine, Uncle Joe and cousin Verna. He loved his football, basketball and boxing. They used to go up Halawa Valley and raced down to Hickam AFB on their bikes. They also went to the arena to watch different sports in Hickam. He helped deliver newspaper with Roland to some 350 customers. During these years, he was given a nickname and that nickname was "Blur." That name was given to him by a friend named Bobby Gerome, who is now on the mainland. My father-in-law Roland and Uncle Sam both attended Kalakaua Intermediate and Farrington H.S., where Uncle Sam graduated in 1949.

They became separated after graduation. My father-in-law became a merchant seaman ad Uncle Sam joined the Army in 1951. In 1956, he was then discharged from the service. He received the Purple Heart, UN Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal with two bronze Service Stars and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. During 1956, he then worked for Punchbowl National Cemetary for 4 years. During his spare time he helped good friend Kimo at the Greenhaven Mortuary. He then was transferred to the United States Post Office in 1960. He has been working there for 25 years and retired as a mail handler. He has been working for the government for 34 years of service.

He was very devoted to his mother, the late Jenny Waiwaiole. His mother meant everything to him. On October 22, 1960 he became the godfather to Charlotte Kalani Gaspar. On the 20th of April 1980, I had a baby girl named Lilinoe Kihewa. On the 12th of July 1980, he became the godfather to my daughter. In 1985, he became ill and now he has passed on. To you Uncle we love you and will always miss you. But within our hearts you will always remain with us.
