Notes

But Bristol merchants could also be asked to supply their planter-customers with labour and it is this function which renders the connection between slaving and mercantile activity more visible.

Samuel Farmer (1613-78), a Bristol merchant active in Barbados during the years of Cromwell's rule, is a living embodiment of such a connection. In 1645 Farmer bought over 500 acres of two estates belonging to one William Hilliard. In return, not only was Farmer obliged to live on the larger of the estates in St John's and to oversee its management, but he was also to supply the estate with 90 African slaves. By the time he died, he appears also to have owned a 300-acre plantation in the parish of St Thomas (reportedly still called 'Farmers'), although he may well have died heavily indebted.
