Youngest son of Lazarus and Susanna Frieberg Fels. (Lazarus was a native of Bavaria, and was a merchant/postmaster in the town's general store in Yanceyville, NC, before moving to Baltimore and then to Philadelphia). Samuel was the first president of Fels & Co., a company founded by his father and older brother in Philadelphia, and who were manufacturers of Fels Naptha Soap, (which was sold to Purex in 1964). Samuel became one of Philadelphia's most prominent philanthropists. The Samuel S. Fels fund still continutes to support several organizations in the Philadelphia area. (Note: The Fels family is shown as living in the town of Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC in the 1860 census. Shown is Lazarus--45, a merchant; his wife, Susan--42; children, Abram--17, a clerk; Bettie--15; Barbara--13; Joseph--6; Morris--3; and Samuel--6 months. By 1870, the family was living in Baltimore, Md., and Samuel's father was listed in the census as a soap manufacturer. A daughter, Roseanna/Rosina had also joined the family. They were shown as being in Philadelphia by 1880.)
