Biography

Samuel Fowler's ancestry is unknown. Many researchers attached him to Philip Fowler and Mary ?Winsley/Winslow, based on the will of Samuel Winsloe/Winsley who left bequests to his 'cousin' Samuel Fowler and his children, Samuel, Mary and Sarah. Although Samuel Fowler was likely related to Winslew, there has been no evidence found to support that Winsley had a sister Mary that married Philip Fowler. [1] [2]

Samuel Fowler was born in England in 1618, according to a deposition. [3]

He is styled a shipwright, and in the early practice of that trade is supposed to have visited Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In 1668, he is of Salisbury and purchased land there. More land purchases are made in 1668/9 in Salisbury and in 1673, land in Amesbury. [3]

His first wife is unknown, but is thought to have been of Portsmouth, New Hampshire where they had children. They are perhaps William and three other children named in the will of Samuel Winsley of Salisbury, dated 17 Aug., 1665; proved 9th, 2d mo., 1667 ; recorded Essex Probate, Bk. 1 : 299, who gives his estate to his cousin, Samuel Fowler's son Samuel, and his daughters Mary and Sarah. [1] [3]

He is thought to have married, second, between1673-1690, Margaret (Norman) Morgan, the widow of Robert Morgan of Beverly, after 1673, as Robert Morgan made his will October 14, 1672. In May 1690, Samuel Fowler Sr. and Margaret, sell lands from the estate of Robert Morgan in Amesbury to Samuel Weed, husband of her daughter Bethiah Morgan. Margaret is called relict of Robert Morgan and now wife of Samuel Fowler. [3] [4]

Samuel Fowler, senior, died in Salisbury, January, 1710/11. [5] [3]
