About Samuel Galloway, II

The Galloway family name is believed to be descended originally from the Strathclyde Britons. This ancient, founding race of the north were a mixture of Gaelic/Celts whose original territories ranged from Lancashire in the south, northward to the south bank of the River Clyde in Scotland. There is an area in Scotland that is named Galloway. There are some stories re the Galloways being cattle thieves or horse thieves. This was an accepted way of life during the 1500s. In 1603 these unruly border clans were dispersed by James 1st. They were banished to England, northern Scotland and Ireland.

At the time that England subdued the Northern part of Ireland, the Galloways moved north to Scotland to fight under Sir William Wallace and Sir Robert Bruce against England. They there became minor land owners and established themselves soundly as Scottish Lords. Their holdings were near those of Bruce and Bell-the-Cat, a family which the Galloways mentioned often in Scottish history. The Galloways were politically involved in beheading Charles I, King of England, and were followers of Cromwell at this time. Soon politics changed, and Royalty was again on the throne of England. Then the seven Galloway brothers involved came to Jamestown, and were

known as Regicides (King killers). Then they spread over the continent.

They are of Scotch Origin they lived in the south west part of Scotland in the district composed of Wigton and Kirkcudbright. During the era of persecution of the Christians in Scotland they moved to Antrim, Ireland. (known as the Galloway district)

It was from this place that the 7 brothers George, Samuel, John, William, James, Peter and Thomas set sail for the New World. They made a settlement in the early province of Pennsylvania in the early eighteenth century

The family spread out from there..
