Samuel M. Hatfield enlisted in Indiana 53rd Infantry Regiment, Company B on 26 September 1864, age 31 at Leavenworth, Indiana. Marched in the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington, D.C. before President Andrew Johnson, 23 May 1865, and was mustered out one week later, 31 May 1865.
Moved from Crawford County, Indiana to Gibson County, Indiana sometime between 1870 and 1880. Admitted to Veteran's Home, Marion, Indiana on 15 December 1905. Died there 23 June 1907, age 73. Cause of death, Sepsis. Buried Marion National Cemetery, Grant County, Indiana, Section 1, Row 13-S-S, Plot 1339. Army record shows 5'11" height, dark complexion, hazel eyes, grey hair, Protestant, could not read nor write, occupation: laborer. In the LDS transcription of the 1870 census, his surname is spelled as Hatfish, despite the fact that there are two other Hatfield families on the same page of the census record.
