Samuel Hinckley's year of birth is sometimes reported as 1587 instead of 1589 and his birthplace is variously reported as being Tenterden or Hawkhurst but as these towns were only about ten miles apart he might have been born somewhere between them.

Samuel married (1-MRIN:445) Sarah SOOLE-991, daughter of Thomas SOOLE-1146 and Mary E. IDDENDEN-1147 (MRIN:507), on 17 May 1617 in Hawkhurst, Kent, England. Samuel brought with him his wife and four children and immediately after his arrival in Boston, went to Situate, Ma. He settled first in Scituate, MA, together with about half of his fellow passengers from the Hercules. He built a home there with Rev. Lothrop called "No. 19"

In 1637 he took the freeman's oath, though his name appears on the list of the proceeding year.

In Jul. 1640 he sold his house, farm and meadows, and removed to Barnstable, Ma., , the Hinckleys again following Rev. Lothrop to Barnstable, MA, where the family is prominent to this day.

He bought lands there of Rev. Joseph Hull, and afterwards had some trouble about the title with the town

GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH IN ENGLAND - Transcribed by Miss ELIZABETH FRENCH and communicated by the Committee on EKnglish Research ….

SAMUEL HINCKLEY, Pioneer of Massachusetts, was the father-in-law of REVEREND JOHN SMITH of BARNSTABLE and WOODBRIDGE, NEW JERSEY. This genealogy has been compiled by that excellent authority, Miss Elizabeth French, (now, Mrs. J. Gardner Bartlett), whose special work in "GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH IN ENGLAND," as formerly conducted by the NEW ENG. HIST. AND GEN. REG., was performed so magnificently for the GENEALOGICAL CAUSE. A single reference and quotation may be taken as conclusive, within its scope. Miss French brought to bear, in her work, great ability and experience, which no one else has equalled in that field. More thorough than any predecessor and more able than any successor, her contributions to New England Genealogy are beyond compare. It was a great loss when the Society, (supra), gave up her services, upon her request.

6325 SAMUEL HINCKLEY was born May 25, 1589 in Tenterden, Kent, England and died October 31, 1662 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. He married SARAH SOOLE May 17, 1617 in Kent, England. She was born June 08, 1600 in Hawkhurst, Kent, England, and died August 18, 1656 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Samuel Hinckley, Esq., a resident of Tenderden, Kent, England, in March of 1635 set sail on the ship Hercules with his wife and four children and others to make a company of 102 bound for America. Samuel Hinckley settled first in Scituate, Massachusetts, with his family and built a home with Rev. Lothrop called No. 19. About half of the 102 persons who came to America with the Hinckleys first settled there at Scituate and were followers of Rev. John Lothrop. In 1638 the Hinckleys moved to Barnstable, Plymouth Colony, where the family name is prominate to this day. Samuel Hinckley had three sons from whom the Hinckley families of America are descendants. Samuel's eldest son Thomas was born in Tenderden, Kent Co., England, and came with his father and mother and 3 sisters to America. Thomas "had a distinguished career in America, and became Governor of Plymouth Colony. Towards the end of the reign of James II New England was constituted a Vice-Royalty, with a Governor and Council. Thomas was nominated to the latter by the King. After the fall of James, Vice-Royalty was abolished, and Thomas Hinckley resumed the Governorship." Descendants of Governor Thomas Hinckley who carried the family name came from his sons Samuel, John and Ebenezer. Samuel II Hinckley was the second oldest son of Samuel Hinckley, who lived to maturity. He was a farmer on his father's estate at Barnstable, Mass. He had 5 male heirs: Benjamin, Joseph, Isaac, Ebenezer, and Thomas. No children of Isaac have been located. Ensign John Hinckley was the youngest child of Samuel Hinckley. He was a man of some note, often engaged in town affairs. He was ensign in the Militia Company and officer of Honor in his day. Ensign John Hinckley had the following heirs: Samuel, Jonathan, Ichabod, Gershom and Job. No marriage of Jonathan has been found. Hinckley Heritage and History, E. Samuel Hinckley, M, b. before 25 May 1589 (chr. date, d. 31 October 1662
Samuel Hinckley, the common ancestor of all of the name in this country is the type of the race. He was a dissenter, though on the 14th of March, 1734/5 in order to escape out of his native country he was obliged to swear that he "conformed to the order and discipline of the church" of England (this oath, whether taken with or without mental reservation was perjury, according to the laws of England. Many of our ancestors were compelled to take it or remain in England. They did outwardly "conform", in order to save themselves from imprisonment or persecution. Many of the first settlers of Barnstable would not outwardly conform and in consequence suffered two years imprisonment in the vile dungeons of the city of London. Mr. Hinckley thought it political to outwardly conform and most persons under the same circumstances would have done the same. The sin consisted in compelling such men to take the oath, rather than in the taking there of). He was honest, industrious and prudent, qualities which have been transmitted from father to son down to present time. The Hinckley's are zealous in the advocacy of whatever opinions they adopt and I never knew one who was dishonest, lazy or imprudent. He was not a distinguished man or prominent in political life. To be a juryman or surveyor of highways, filled the measure of his political aspirations. He appears to have been a man of good estate for the times and all his children were as well educated as his means would permit. Very few of his descendants have amassed wealth and a smaller number have been pinched by poverty.
In 1628 it appears by the colony records that Elder Nathaniel Tilden, of Tenterden, purchased lands in Scituate. He is spoken of as being at that time in this country. He was a man of wealth and before removing his family probably came over, as many did, to examine the country and fix on a place for his future residence. In the spring of 1635 Mr. Tilden, Samuel Hinckley, John Lewis and James Austin of Tenterden, in the County of Kent, in England and several other families from that County, making a company of 102, counting men, women, children and servants resolved to emigrate to New England. In the latter part of March they sailed from Sandwich in the Ship "Hercules", 200 tons, Capt. John Witherly. Circumstances make it probable that they intended to join the Rev. Lothrop who, with several members of his church, had taken passage in the "Griffin" for Boston the preceding summer. More than half of the passengers who came over in the "Hercules" were afterwards inhabitants of Scituate.
Samuel Hinckley brought with him his wife Sarah (Soule) and four children and immediately after his arrival in Boston went to Scituate and built a house which Mr. Lothrop calls No. 19. Samuel Hinckley continued to reside in Scituate till July 1640, when he sold his house, farm and meadows and removed to Barnstable.
Samuel Hinckly bought his lands of the Rev. Joseph Hull and respecting the title he afterwards had some trouble with the town. There is no record of his lands; but their location is well known. His house lot was bounded south by his son Thomas and west by Rowley's pond near which, according to tradition, he built his house. A small one-story building with a thatched roof. Precisely how long he resided in that house is not known. He was one of the very first who removed to West Barnstable where he owned one of the best farms in the town, now owned by Levi L. Goodspeed, Esq. His son in law John Smith, owned the adjoining lands since known as the Otis farm.
In 1637 Mr. Samuel Hinckly, as he was called in the latter part of his life, took the freeman's oath, though his name appears on the list of the preceding year. As before remarked, he was not a prominent man, though his name frequently occurs on the records as a juror, a surveyor of highways and as one of the granters of lands at Suckinesset.
As a church member he does not appear to have been intolerant. The fact that he was twice indicted for "entertaining strangers," indicates that he belonged to the liberal party, of which his friends Cudworth, Hatherly and Robinson and his son-in-law, Rev. John Smith, were prominent members."
Samuel was born before 25 May 1589 (chr. date at Harrietsham, county Kent, England. He was christened on 25 May 1589 at Harrietsham, county Kent, England.3,4,5 He was the son of Robert Hynckley and Katherine NN

His daughter Susannah, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth are named and he gives each of them and to each of their children one schilling each. He gives legacies to his grandchildren Samuel, Thomas, Mary, Bathsheba children of his son Thomas and to his grandsons Samuel and Jonathan Cobb. GEDCOM Note

“His will was dated 10/8/1662. He leaves the use of his house and garden and some land to his wife Bridget, during her widowhood, and also gives her “all the household stuff she brought with her,” and his two cows; but his landed property and other live stock, which appears considerable, are divided chiefly between his sons, Thomas, Samuel and John. He leaves to each of his daughters, Susanna, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth, and to each of their children, the nominal sum of one shilling, by which I presume the daughters were all married and had been provided for. He also bequeaths some of his live stock to his grandchildren, Samuel and Thomas, sons, and Mary and Bathshea, daughters, of Thomas Hinckley, _and “Henry Cobb’s sons, Samuel and Jonathon.” The inventory of his personal property, £162.16.0. was made by Henry Cobb and William Crocker.”

Listed as one of those able to bear arms in the Colony of New Plymouth, Barnstable, Yarmouth & Taunton in 1643.
