Notes:

On 7 September 1642, Samuel HOTCHKISS and Elizabeth CLEVERLY were given permission by the court to marry. There both were not able to make proof of parents' consent but affirmed they did have such consent. This indicates that both Samuel and Elizabeth were underage at the time. New Haven records show nearly 200 names of men to whom the oath of fidelity were administered July 1644. Another 28, including Samuel HOSKINS, received the oath 5 August 1644, making him eligible to vote. Perhaps Samuel had just become 21 which would place his birth date ca1622/23 in Dodington, Parish of Whitechurch, County Shropshire.

  • *Samuel Hotchkiss is the ancestor of Emma Hale, the wife of Prophit Joseph Smith Jr. of the Mormon Church.

Samuel Hotchkiss (son of John Hotchkiss and Margaret Nevett)453 was born Abt. 1622 in Essex, England. He married Elizabeth Cleverly on 07 Sep 1642 in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut.

Includes NotesNotes for Samuel Hotchkiss:

According to Linda Coate Dudick:

"Samuel is listed as the 4th son in his father's will. He and his other siblings were given 10 pounds each in the will. Samuel appeared to be the only son not living in Whitchurch, England at the writing of his father's will in 1656. This information comes from a book out on this Samuel that could be useful to obtain, "The Hotchkiss Family, First Six Generations: Descendants of Samuel Hotchkiss (ca. 1622-1663) of New Haven, Connecticut" by Nellie Cowdell. He was one of the original founders of New Haven, Connecticut in 1638. According to Virkus, he came over with the Davenport Colony that came on the "Hector" in June 1637. Some less respected sources give his arrival date at 1642 or 1643 instead. Samuel and Elizabeth sounded like they were a couple very much attracted to each other and paid a severe price for it at the time. "For their filthy dalliance together, which was confessed by them both, they were both severely whipped." Then later when they came to ask for permission to get married "having entered into contract, sinfully and wickedly defiled each other with filthy dalliance and unclean passages, by which they have both made themselves unfit for any other, and for which they have both received public correction, upon these considerations, granted them liberty to marry." This occured in 1642. Samuel was apparently accused of theft, and for sleeping on his watch for which he was also beaten. In 1652, he purchased a home and lot from John Thompson. In 1655, he was assigned a seat in the meeting house next to the soldier's seats and his wife was given one on the women's side. In June 1664 he attended the General Court in New Haven. On Aug. 4, 1664 he took the oath of fidelity. Upon his death, his estate was valued at 86 pounds, 18 shillings. He was listed as Samuel, Sr. He is the ancestor of Emma Hale, the wife of Prophet Joseph, Smith, Jr."

GEDCOM Note

Genealogist/historian D. L. Jacobus writes about the 25 November 1657 will of John Hotchkiss who was buried on 10 January 1666 at Whitechurch, Shropshire, England -- "To my son, Samuel, if he be living, ten pounds or if he be deceased then to his children, ten pounds to be equally divided among them." Apparently this Samuel Hotchkiss was not at or near the family home in England and apparently he was known to have children. This John Hotchkiss may well be the father of immigrant Samel Hotchkiss (1622-1663)

Samuel Hotchkiss (1622-1663) was apparently born and raised in England and then immigrated to America. TRADITION has it that Samuel Hotchkiss (1622-1663) immigrated as part of the Davenport-Eaton expedition in 1637 and became an early settler at New Haven, CT. It is a matter of New Haven, CT record that on 05 August 1642 Samuel Hotchkiss and Elizabeth Cleverly (ancestry sought) were whipped for "filthy dalliance together". On 07 September 1642 they married with permission from the court. They were both under age. They were said to both have parental permission to marry, but they did not have proof of this parental permission. They settled at New Haven and had 7 children there. Samuel Hotchkiss took the Oath of Fidelity on 05 August 1644 and it has been suggested that perhaps he had just turned 21 at this time. Samuel Hotchkiss purchased land and a house in 1651 or 1652 and in December of 1661 and March of 1662 records show that he purchased more land. The February 1655 records show that Samuel Hotchkiss was assigned a seat at the Meeting House and that his wife was assigned a seat on the women's side of the Meeting House. On 11 August 1662 Samuel Hotchkiss was chosen "poundkeeper" and in March of 1663 he was chosen "fence viewer" for the coming year. Samuel Hotchkiss died unexpectedly on 28 December 1663 and left no will. His widow was advised that she would be awarded one third of the estate and that two thirds of the estate would be divided equally among the children as they came of age.
