Biography

Samuel Jordan, the ninth son of Thomas Jordan of Chuckatuck and Margaret (Brasheur) Jordan, was born in Nansemond Co, VA (this county no longer exists) in the year 1679.

On 10 Dec 1703 in Henrico Co., VA, Samuel married Elizabeth Fleming who was baptized 28 Oct 1685 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA. Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles Fleming who was born about 1652 in Scotland and came to America with his parents by 1653. Charles Fleming died in 1721 at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA. Elizabeth Fleming's mother, Susanna (Tarleton) Fleming, was born in 1663 in VA to parents Stephan and Susanna (Bates) Tarleton. Susanah (Tarleton) Fleming died in 1717 at New Kent Co., VA. Charles and Susanah (Tarleton) Fleming were married at New Kent Co., VA about 1679.

Samuel Jordan resided in New Kent Co., and continued his family's tradition by being a devout Quaker.

At a Vestry held on 08 May 1707 at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA, "Charles Fleming by an order of Court was appointed Surveyor for making rodes (roads) to his mill". Several men including, Samuel Jordan, his son-in-law and son of Thomas Jordan (1634-1699) of Chuckatuck, were appointed to help him.

Samuel's will, recorded in New Kent Co., VA, was dated 20 Oct 1718 (see Tyler's Quarterly Hist. & Gen. Magazine, Vol. 20, 20 Jan 1939, #3).

Elizabeth Fleming was born in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, VA 23 OCT 1687. Elizabeth died 1758 in Of, Amelia, VA, at 70 years of age. She married twice. ? She married Samuel Jordan in Henrico, VA, 10 OCT or 10 Dec 1703. (Check date - the earlier date may have been the wedding bann.)

On 10 Dec 1703, Col. Samuel Jordan, Jr. was married to Elizabeth Raley, daughter of Col. Charles Fleming of New Kent County (Henrico Monthly Meeting of Friends: Record Book 1699-1757, pp. 35-36;< AncestryImage >. The date is towards the middle of that second page and reads "10th day of the 10/mon 1703", which in the Quaker calendar of the time (where 1st month was March) translates to 10 December 1703. Banns were read (in Quaker terminology, intentions to marry were published) on 8th day of 8th month (i.e., 8 October 1703) - < AncestryImage > - and on 12th day of 9/mon (i.e. 12 November 1703) - < AncestryImage >.

In his will of 2 October 1718, proved 11 June 1719, Samuel Jordan of New Kent County mentioned a wife Elizabeth (almost certainly the one he had married in 1703) and stated that he had five children then living, but unfortunately did not name them (two copies of the will are preserved in Library of Virginia, Richmond: Louisa County, Chancery Court Papers, File 1788-004 (Charles Jordan vs. Thomas Freeman), (https://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/case_detail.asp?CFN=109-1788-004, images 2-5 in case file).

  2. Col. Samuel Jordan, Jr.. Married 1) Ruth Meredith 2) Judith Scott Ware.
  3. Matthew Jordan, I. Married Jane Ware.
  4. unknown child (1) Jordan
  5. unknown child (2) Jordan

Detached children:

Elizabeth (Fleming) Jordan, Samuel's "relick" reportedly married secondly Thomas Raley in 1719 and died on 20 July 1763 in New Kent County, Virginia.

The proof that Elizabeth Fleming, widow of Samuel Jordan, remarried to Thomas Raley comes from his answer (as co-defendant in the suit of Charles Jordan to recover the descendants of the enslaved persons left by his father Samuel Jordan in his will to his widow Elizabeth) that he, Thomas Raley, had married Elizabeth the widow of Samuel Jordan and that she had died on or about 20 July 1763 (note, the word "relick" is not used here). Notes for Col. Samuel Jordan:

Samuel and Elizabeth were married according to Quaker rites but they later became Episcopalians.

William Randolph of Virginia was the brother in law of Samuel Jordan. Samuel Jordan and William married Fleming sisters.

One source reflects Samuel's death as 12/10/1703 in Virginia while another source suggests a 1760 death date in North Carolina. Further research needs to be done to determine which, if either, is correct.
