They went from Boston Massachusetts to Newark New Jersey, Washington DC, Lexington Virginia, Salisbury North Carolina and finally, in 1828, settled in Lincolnton North Carolina. Samuel Sr. was converted to Methodism [ the direction of his wife's family ] and eventually licensed to preach as a local minister. '... he was a man of unusually strong convictions. He loved the truth and hated sham and was the very soul of honor. He was a coach maker who conducted a successful business in Lincolnton even after becoming a local minister.'
