Samuel Sr. was converted to Methodism [ the direction of his wife's family ] and eventually licensed to preach as a local minister. '... he was a man of unusually strong convictions. He loved the truth and hated sham and was the very soul of honor. He was a coach maker who conducted a successful business in Lincolnton even after becoming a local minister.'
