Samuel enlisted on 2 May 1864 and served during the American Civil War as part of Company H of the 136th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The Regiment was organized at Camp Chase, which was a military staging, training and prison camp established west of downtown Columbus, Ohio in May 1861. The regiment left Camp Chase on May 13, 1864 for Washington City (now Washington DC) and after arriving on May 20, was placed on garrison duty at Forts Ellsworth, Williams and North, which were part of the defenses of Washington south of the Potomac River. It remained on duty for its full 100 day term which expired on August 20, 1864 and mustered out on August 30. Samuel was discharged on 31 May 1864.
He married Flora Ann Winget 11 December 1873 in Union County, OH.
His occupation was a harness maker.
Buried on June 7, 1911 at Oakdale cemetery per death certificate.
