Samuel Lord, eldest son of Lieut. Tobias and Mehitable (Scammon) Lord, married February 26, 1799, Hannah Jefferds, daughter of William and Olive (Gilpatrick) Jefferds. His wife was a sister of Olive Jefferds who married George Lord, half-brother of Samuel Lord. From 1795 to 1800 he was book-keeper for his father, and later became part owner in many vessels principally engaged in the West India trade. At one time he was considered very wealthy, but later met with many losses, several of his vessels being captured by French privateers. After the death of his wife, which occurred February 14, 1816, he closed up his business in Kennebunk, and in 1826 went to New York, where he did some trading in coffee and cotton. From 1827 to 1834, he engaged in the dry goods business on Grand Street, afterwards going into business with his son, Samuel, Jr. In January, 1835, he joined his brother, Tobias Lord, 3d, in the wholesale grocery business. He returned to Kennebunk n 1848.
