About Samuel Vance Lusk

Birth: Dec. 9, 1833 Death: May 12, 1918

S.V. Lusk (Samuel Vance) was born 12-9-1833 in Monroe County, Tennessee. In 1861, Sam shot and fatally wounded the husband of his younger sister, Bettie Ann, at a family picnic in what is now Flower Mound. He killed Dr. Hines, Bettie Ann's husband, defending his sister's honor. He hid in a house until dark and escaped by wearing women's clothing and using a mule to ride from the area. He enlisted in the 14th Texas Cavalry and served as a Captain in the Civil War. He returned home after the war and joined the Flower Mound Presbyterian Church where he became known as the greatest gospel singer in Denton County. He was a successful businessman and owned several farms. He was described as being tall, thickset, and with a head of silver hair and a white beard and moustache. He was a striking figure who rode the area in a surrey behind two sleek, fat mules until buying the first car in southern Denton County. He never married and died 5-12-1918 while visiting his niece Ella Crawford, in Bonham, Texas. By Susan Lett,1999; used with permission
