About Samuel Martin
Samuel Martin was the son of Roger Martin (1708-1755) a lawyer who married Margaret Mack also of Kircudbright, Galloway, Scotland. Samuel was just eight when his father died, his three sisters had also died, and he went with his older cousin John Halliday (c. 1715-1779) to Antigua in 1757. Here he helped run the plantation and became Collector of Customs at St John's when John retired.
Samuel married Grace SAVAGE (1758-1810) in 1778 and had eleven children. Samuel and Grace had an Anglo-Indian indentured servant named Betsie Pearson. Betsie had an illegitimate child with Samuel named Jeremiah. He later moved to Lincolnshire, England where he later died, not long after Jeremiah visited him, but he did not acknowledge Jeremiah as a legitimate son. Consequently, Jeremiah was devastated and later sailed to Hawai'i making the Big Island his home and where he raised his own family and died being the progenitor of a large big Island family carrying the name Martin.
Samuel Martin was taken to Antigua as a young lad by a planter named John Halliday. When Mr Halliday retired in 1779 Samuel took over the position of Collector of Customs for the port of St John.
