Samuel was the son of Abel Merrill and Abigail Stevens.

He married Ruth Morse on May 4, 1717 in Newbury, Essex Co. Massachusetts and they had the following Children; Samuel, William, Joshua, Sarah, Ruth, Abel, Daniel, Nathaniel and William. (Nine children are listed at Ancestry.com, but Daniel is the only one living to maturity).

Samuel also married Susanne Hamblin (or Hamblett)

Samuel (4) Merrill (Abel (3), Abel (2)) was born 13 Sept. 1695, in Newbury, Mass., and died 14 Mar. 1763, in Nottingham West (now Hudson), N. H. He lived in Newbury until about 1748, when he removed to Nottingham West. He married (1) (pub. 4 May, 1717, in Newbury,) Ruth Morse, daughter of William and Sarah (Merrill) Morse. (Sarah (3) Merrill, who married William Morse, was a daughter of Daniel (2) Merrill. See 5.) Ruth Morse was born 4 Mar. 1698/0. Samuel (4) Merrill married (2) Susanna Hamblet, who survived him. The date of the second marriage was 5 Mar. 1752. Children:

i. Ruth (5), b. 4 Jan. 1720/1; d. Dec. 1719.
ii. Daniel (5), b. 3 July, 1722.
iii. Samuel (5), b. 14 Mar. 1723/4; d. 16 Sept. 1758.

v.Sarah (5), b. 7 Mar. 1728/9; m. 1752 Samuel Hills.
