OBITUARY. - MR. S. N. HOGG.

Mr. Samuel Nisbet Hogg died at Wahroonga on Sunday, aged 85 years, Mr. Hogg' was born in Madras, India, and was the son of Dr. Thomas Alexander Hogg, of the Indian Army, and grandson of the Rev. William Pascoe Crook, who acted as colonial chaplain during the period that Governor Bligh was under arrest. Mr. Hogg was brought to Australia at an early age by his parents. He was educated at the school of the Rev John Pendrill at Glebe Point He entered the service of the Bank of New South Wales and eventually was appointed manager of the Balmain branch occupying that position for 25 years until his retirement. He was for many years honorary treasurer of the Balmain Hospital and the Balmain Benevolent Society a member of the Pioneers Club and for some time was president of the Sydney Unitarian Church He wrote extensively for various financial papers and during the war published a novel the proceeds of which amounting to some hundreds of pounds were given to the Blinded, Soldiers fund Balmain Past and Present a valuable work of reference dealing with the history of Balmain from its earliest settlement to 1930 is In manuscript form In the Mitchell Library Mr Hogg is survived by three sons, Messrs Herbert John and Owen Hogg and a daughter Miss Helen Hogg. Samuel Nisbet Hogg (abt 1849-1934) was born in Chenai Madras India, the son of Thomas A and Martha P Crook. He married Mary Proctor, the daughter of John Proctor and Ellen Whalen in 1882, in NSW, Australia.
