- Story: Samuel Hockley 1800 Archives Posted by KIM RAYNER Report abuse Samuel Hockley was convicted of Grand Larceny and sentenced to 7 years transportation on July 14, 1791 at Guildhall, Cambridge (town), Cambridge. He came to Australia aboard the "Royal Admiral"under the command of Henry Essex Bond. The ship set sail from Portsmouth Hampshire, England 30 May, 1792 and arrived in Sydney, Australia 7 Oct 1792. ®5 Samuel Hockley is listed among the loyalists who were ready to assist the Governments side in Sydney at the time of the battle of Vinegar Hill, 4 Mar 1804. ®7 He was amongst those who were to protect Sydney should the uprising spread. History shows that the rebels were stopped at Vinegar Hill, and Samuel's services were not required. At the time of the 1822 and 1828 census he was listed as 'free by servitude' and was working as a butcher in George Street, Sydney. His son, John Samuel was listed along with him as a family group in both records. Colonial Secretaries Index 1788-1825 The 1823/24/25 census record shows that Samuel Hockley adopted Henry Palmer who is shown as being born in the colony. HOCKLEY, Samuel

- Story For Samuel Hockley
- Samuel Hockley was assigned a convict George Rowley who came out for 14 years on the George Stewart/Stuart (source Colonial Papers Ancestery.com.au) On searcing for more information on George it appears he escaped on an open boat with one other convict to Van Diemans land. He was sent back to Port Jackson on board the Mermaid and then sent to the penal colony at Port Macquarie aboard the Lady Nelson in 1825.(source Colonial Papers Ancestery.com.au) I have noticed that a George Rowley was buried in 1868 at St Thomas Enfield the same cemetery that Samuel Hockley was buried in 1859.Did he come back to Samuel?
