About Samuel Phillips, Convict "Lady Harewood" 1832

Samuel’s first wife was Hannah Draper and they were married 24 September 1828 in Trotton, Sussex, England
Samuel and Maria also had 2 girls
Anna born 28 October 1840 in Campbelltown married David Feck on 6 May 1857 in Campbelltown.
Maria born 24 March 1842 Campbelltown married George Trinnick on 3 May 1958 in Campbelltown. She died 25 August 1881 in Flemington Vic.

Richard William’s birth was never registered. I have the birth certificates of his children and I don’t think he really knew when he was born because it works out to be a different year for what it says on the certificates of his age at that time. When he was employed by the Railway it says that he was born on 5 February 1844 but I have his brother Samuel’s birth certificate and he was born in May that year so that wasn’t correct.

I found some entries from the the Boys Orphan School book at the State Library NSW: Of all the sites that mention the Phillips family I have never seen a reference to this so I thought you might like to include it.

Brothers Samuel (age 8) and William (age 7) Phillips entered the Orphanage on 5 Feb 1851. The document under parents name showed Father Dead, Mother Living. Then another entry says: The boys were returned to father by order of the Governor General on 2 Sept 1851. The Boys Orphan School was an orphanage for the children of convicts when the parents were deceased. The mother would be Martha Madden.

Martha Madden and Elizabeth Sims (Mullally) came as convicts on the same ship, Samuel may have gone to the Monaro district looking for work as there was a draught on in the Camden district at this time because of the women’s friendship. As there would have been little communication, Martha may have got sick as she later died from Bronchitis and the two young boys were put into the Orphanage. The girls and Richard would have been older. We will never know now.
