About Samuel M Reeves
REEVES KILLING AT DILLARD, MISSOURI. Thursday morning 3/7/1907. Three men shot at a dance. Sam Reeves came to his death. The verdict of the Coroner's jury is that Tom Dickens fired the final shot. At a dance at the house of Thomas Parker close to Dillard, a town on the Sligo & Eastern railroad in the southern part of Crawford County, on last Saturday night a row occured, in which several persons were shot, and which Sam Reeves received a wound from which he died on Sunday following. Reports as to who started the fight are conflicting. It appears that when a general fight started, Sam Reeves was the first to draw a revolver. When a man by the name of James A White (son of Henry White) came up behind Reeves and caught his hand containing the drawn weapon. The pistol was discharged & the ball took affect in Reeves breast, entering near the collarbone on one side and went through him coming out on the opposite side near the collarbone. Tom Dickens was present and it is claimed he shot Sam Reeves. The ball entered Reeves body in the back below the kidney and came out beneath the floating ribs. The second shot from Dickens pistol is claimed to have struck a young man by the name of Crange in the upper part of his thigh in the rear. The wound was not serious. Prosecuting Attorney Henry W. Smith went out to investigate the killing Monday. Squire John Hedley of Osage Township had impanelled a Coroners Jury, and was holding an inquest which took all day Monday and all day Tuesday. The verdict of the jury was in substance that Sam Reeves came to his death from a pistol shot wound inflicted by hands of Thomas Dickens. No arrests have been made up to this time. The Mirror went to press Wednesday night. Dickens is said to of went to his homestead claim on Courtois Creek. James White is reported as getting along nicely and would recover from his wound.
