Samuel Sharples appears to be the son of the Deputy Gov. John Sharples but this has not been confirmed. Both father and son(?) were on the Isle of Man. Both had background as soldiers. They've been connected here as father and son by me, to enhance further research on their pedigrees
While in the military and stationed on the Isle of Man, Samuel Sharples was married to Ellin (sic) Preston but then had relations with his wife's sister Jane. This adulterous union led to the birth of a child. All three subsequently moved to Ireland. Years later both Samuel and Jane confessed their sins to Quaker elders in writing. The Sharples family were kinsmen for several generation to a Royalist family of Lancashire. The Royalist fortunes faltered in during the rise of Cromwell about the time Samuel Sharples was born... We don't know for certain that the Isle of Man's Dep. Gov. John Sharples was his father... He could have been more distantly related. {MMvB, researcher and profile manager Oct 8 2019}
When his son, JOHN married (Mar. 30, 1687) Samuel was not among the witnesses

date of birth would have to be at least 17 years before he became convinced in the Quaker faith and probably well before that.

Shortly after discovering her pregnancy, Jane Preston left for Ireland and became a servant.
https://search.findmypast.com/record?id=IRE%2FQUAKER%2FMM11F-1%2F00... The account of Samuel Sharples follows Jane's. His contrition appears somewhat stilted compared to hers. This child born out of wedlock could easily be Mary Sharples... or a child still unknown and unrecorded... I feel that it's Ann, but I don't know ... |
