Biography

There were two gentlemen named Samuel Snell who lived in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area around this time. The Samuel Snell who married Mary Fickett and had seven children is NOT the Samuel Snell who married Hannah Hobart.

6) SAMUEL SNELL, Portsmouth, Greenland. Samuel and farm taxed for the Mill Dam 1713, he or son taxed as late as 1737. In 1717 (Snellen) he sold Portsmouth common rights. He and wife Mary (apparently Fickett) were received into covenant South Church, January 29, 1723-24. In 1741 he or his son, of Durham, sold a 1721 Scarboro grant and in 1742 sold Barrington right to Thomas. Children; Samuel Jr. and Thomas, both received into covenant with their parents. Thomas, Cordwainer, Barrington 1734, Durham, married Joanna Pinkham who was granted administration 16 Sept 1730, large estate. Abigail, John, Martha, Mary, Solomon, Barrington 1736 married Elizabeth Reynolds.

Text from the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & New Hampshire, pages 231- 232 1) JOHN FICKETT, Scarboro, 23 in August 1670. He married Abigail Libby. In the division of her father's lands, her share went to Thomas Fickett and Samuel Snell. Thomas Fickett had bought from his brother John and their aunt Rebecca Guy. Children; John, Rebecca married at Marbleb. 8 March, 1708. Henry Guy, widowed in 1744. 4 ar m. ch. Mary, apparently the wife of Samuel Snell or Snelling in Portsmouth in 1734 when they were baptized with seven children, two of them adults.
