Samuel Sturgis (Sturges) was born about 1668 [SIC] in Yarmouth to Samuel Sturgis and Mary Hedge.[1]

His father died in 1674 when Samuel was only age 5. His mother remarried to John Coggeshall in 1679.

Samuel married Mary Ivet (widow of Nathaniel Oris) on October 14,1697.[1][2]

Their children included:[1]

  1. Nathaniel, b. Jan. 8, 1699 - d. Jan. 20, 1711
  2. John, b. June 6, 1701
  3. Solomon, b. Sep. 25, 1703
  4. Mary, b. Feb. 14, 1706
  5. Moses, b. June 18, 1708
  6. Jonathan, b. Nov. 1, 1711
  7. Nathaniel, b. 2 Feb. 2, 1715.

Mrs. Orris had by her first husband, Nathaniel, who came to Barnstable from Nantucket, and d. 23 Nov., 1696, Susan, Deborah and Jane.[1]

His wife Mary died 1755.

Samuel died 26 Jan 1762 (See Notes)[3]in Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay and was buried in Cobb's Hill Cemetery, Barnstable.[4]

His will was probated March 4, 1762.[3]

Notes

DOD 1762 or 1769?

His gravestone inscription was transcribed as:

"Here lies buried Mr. Samuel Sturgis who decd Janry ye 26th 1762 in ye 86th year of his age."[4] However, his Findgrave entry shows he died 1769, based on gravestone photos posted there. Note that the stone is very deteriorated and difficult to read.[4]

The fact that his will was administered on March 4, 1762 suggests that the first date in 1762 is correct.[3]

Date of Birth

Some histories suggest he was born about 1668.[1] This would make him age 94 at death, assuming he died in January 1762 as supported by his probate that year.[3]

His grave inscription[4] also brings into question his date of birth. If he in fact died in 1762 (as suggested by his probate in that year), and he was age 86, that suggests he was born about 1676.

If he had died later (1769) at age 86, his birth would be about 1681.

It is likely that his age at death at death was incorrectly transcribed, as the stone is very deteriorated.
