Biography

Samuel Sturgis was born about 1641[1] in Yarmouth or Sandwich, Barnstable, Plymouth, to Edward Sturgis and Elizabeth Munnings.[2]

Samuel married Mary Hedge about 1665[3][4][5][6][7] in Yarmouth. They had at least two children, Samuel born about 1669 in Yarmouth and Mary, who wed Josias Coggeshall (Coggeshall in America, pg 27).

Samuel died about November 3, 1674, in Yarmouth[8][9] about age of 34, survived by his parents, leaving his young son Samuel, about age 5, and his wife Mary who remarried.

"An inventory of the Goods, Chattels, and Lands of Samuel Sturgis deceased the third day of November 1674 exhibited to the court held at Plymouth in October 1674 and ordered to be recorded." (Note, the dates in the heading may have been flipped by the record keeper. There are lines crossed out. Perhaps a little too much ale when writing it.) Mary Sturgis made oath to the truth of the inventory on 30th of the 3rd month 1675.[10]

In most compilations he is shown as born Sandwich (Barnstable)[9][8]
Possibly born in Yarmouth, where his father was known to be in Yarmouth by about 1639/40, and was previously living in Charlestown.[13]
