Was not happy his daughter would marry....
One of the funniest family stories involves parental opposition to the Jerome/Mildred
ma:riage. The family was upset at the thought that Mildred was marrying below her
station by choosing a Russian Jew (even though he was 42 atthe time and she 38).
Apparently they married in secret, and the marriage only became known in the family
when her mother came across the license. Her father, Samuel, was outraged and wanted
to have it annulled for some kind of fraud. In order to create grounds, he started
questioning Jerome about his past and found out the village from which he came. Samuel
then scoured Denver to find someone else from the same village and found a man named
Piser. Piser swore that there were no families in the village named Wiesman. Samuel
then asked Jerome if there were anyone in the village named Piser, and Jerome responded
no. Accordingly, Samuel figured that he had caught Jerome and arranged for the two
men, each unbeknownst to the other, to show up at the same time at his store so he could
expose the whole thing. They both showed up and fell into each other's arns, long lost
friends. Apparently, it had not occurred to Samuel that they might both have changed
their last names when they came to the US. Anyhow, that was the end of his attempt to
annul the marriage.
