Samuel and his brother Joseph Walker Taylor fought for the south during the American Civil War. Two other brothers fought for the north.
In 1861 he joined Adam R. Johnson's 10th Kentucky Partisan Rangers Later it would simply be known at the 10th Kentucky Cavalry. He was Captain of Company E, which comprised of men mainly from Daviess, Hancock and Jefferson counties. He would go on to serve with the famous John Hunt Morgan and be involved in the Christmas raid of Morgan's and also be in the ill-fated Indiana and Ohio raid, which would fail and land many of Morgan's troops in prison, where many would remain until wars end.
He himself was one captured with Morgan. He climbed the prison walls and made possible the escape of Morgan and the others.
