About Samuel Thompson

Samuel Thompson was the son of British Admiral Samuel Thompson and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Blair, daughter of Virginia House of Burgesses member John Blair. Samuel was born in Anderson, South Carolina about 1765/1770 and would have been a child during the American Revolution. About 1789 Samuel married Elizabeth Raborn and they started a family immediately. Together they had 6 children: - Thomas Thompson - Flemin Thompson, married Elizabeth Davis and Lezebeth Caradine - Nancy Thompson, married Edmund Gilchrist - Julia Thompson, married Freeman - Eliza Thompson, married Daniel Carmichael and James Turner - Rhoda Thompson, married Ramsay

About 1825 the Thompson family pulled up roots and moved to Walker, Alabama. Samuel and Elizabeth went, and at least several of their children as well, including their son Flemming Thompson and his wife and children. Thompsons of the same names both Samuel and Flemming stayed in South Carolina and others moved to Mississippi making it difficult to trace the families accurately. But it is known with certainty that Samuel and Elizabeth and their son Flemming and his wife Lezebeth did move to Alabama. Flemming's daughter Martha was born in SC in 1824 and his next child, Sarah, was born in 1826 in Alabama. Samuel's wife of almost 40 years, Elizabeth Raborn Thompson, died in Walker County, Alabama on 18 September 1828. Samuel married a second time in 1830. Samuel was 60 years old and his bride Mary Prescott was 30 years younger than him. Together they had 5 more children: - Samuel Thompson Jr - Josiah Thompson - Catherine Thompson - Caroline Thompson - Waddy Thompson

Samuel wrote his last will and testament on August 22 1839 and died shortly after that in Jefferson/Walker Alabama. In the will he named all 11 children as well as his wife Mary Prescoat, and made arrangements for the younger children to be raised and supported with Mary on the family plantation.
