WHO WAS SAMUEL Tidd?

"Two of the more significant studies of the Tidd family were done by Mary Walton Ferris2 and Mary Lovering Holman, F.A.S.G.3 In each of these studies, there was agreement that Samuel Tidd died by 1642 when his widow had remarried John Southwick. Their assumption was predicated on the birth of the first child of John and Sarah (widow of Samuel Tidd) Southwick. Ferris did acknowledge that Samuel is "said to have d. at Woburn in 1651 but really d. by 1642 (probably at Salem) for in that year his widow remarried again .... ""4

"A thorough examination of the records pertinent to Samuel Tid by Dr. Neil D. Thompson, F.A.S.G., revealed there was only one by that name present in this area and time-Samuel Tid of Woburn, who died in 1651.5 The original records of Woburn clearly show that the entry of his death in those records is between 28:6m[August]:1651 and 15:8m[October]:1651. This is supported by the inventory of his estate, which was taken on 4:8m[October] 1651; so he was dead by then, probably in September 1651.6 An undated statement by Sarah, the widow of Samuel Tid, states that, on her husband's deathbed, he asked her to give his three brothers one "suighte" each and the rest to be hers.7 John Tidd, the father of Samuel, made a will dated 9:2m[April]:1656, proved 10:9m[November]:1656, which, among other legacies, gave to the daughter of his son Samuel part of his residuary estate after the demise of his wife. This would indicate that Samuel and Sarah Tid had only one surviving child, the Elizabeth Giles alias Tidd mentioned in John Southwick's will."8

"These records alone should confirm the suspicion that the published Salem records were in error on the birth years of the two eldest children since Samuel Tid's widow could hardly have children with John Southwick seven years prior to the death of Samuel Tid. If further proof is needed, we also examined the oldest children of John and Sarah (-) Southwick."

There seems to be two of him, one living in Salem and one living in Woburn. By coincidence, both had daughters named Elizabeth who married men named J. Giles (John and James, respectively).

John2, Southwick, born 1620, died Oct. 25, 1672; married first, Sarah, widow of Samuel Tidd; second, widow Hannah Flint; third, Sarah Burnet who survived him and married Thomas Cooper 2nd.

Samuel Tidd and Sarah his wife had one child, Eliza Tidd, born 1642.
