Samuel Worcester came from England with his family to Salisbury about 1630. His wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Francis Parrott, a leading citizen of Rowley, MA. In May 1663, he bought 300 acres of upland from Samuel Sewall of Newbury for 70 pounds, most of it bordering on the Merrimac River. In 1675, it was incorporated as Bradford, and in 1850, became Groveland.
The first settlers of Bradford were involved in fighting during "Bradford's War." Samuel's family was burned out of their home twice during the war years. At the first meeting of the "Merrimac People", Samuel was appointed overseer. He was the first Representative from Bradford to the General Court and served from 1679 to 1681. He left home on foot for Boston to attend a meeting of the Court to be held February 22, 1681. On the evening of February 20, reaching that part of Lynn called "Saugus", he failed to find accommodations at the inn, and started for the house of a friend. In the morning he was found dead in the middle of the road, kneeling in the attitude of prayer.
