About Sara Maria (alias Maria da Nunes da Costa aka Ramires) da Fonseca
His wife, Maria da Fonseca, belonged to a family that has militant crypto-Jews among its members, among them the eminent “Portuguese” physician Eliahu Monalto who married Maria’s sister and who reverted to Judaism in Venice in about 1611. A half sister of Maria was burned at the stake in 1582 for judaizing. Shortly after her husband’s death in1609 a brother of hers was seized by the Lisbon Inquisition. This led Maria and her sons to flee to Madrid and then a few years later, to St. Jean de Luz in southwest France. Maria died there, but her remains were brought to Amsterdam by her son Lopo da Fonseca Ramires and she was buried as Sara Curiel.
