About Sarah Andrews

Birth: 1677 Death: 1732

Sarah Ong Andrews, wife of Edward Andrews.

There is no marker, but she is recorded in a partial listing of graves at Friends Cemetery, Tuckerton, in Leah Blackman's 'History of Little Egg Harbor,' from 1880, pages 206-208.

NOTE: Regarding the parentage of Alice Andrews Higbee Mathis, there's a lot of confusion and debate. It's now believed that the source document from which several biographers and historians (such as Leah Blackman) drew this information is in error.

Edward's brother Mordecai clearly lists Alice Mathews (a.k.a. Alice Andrews Higbee Mathis) as his own daughter, both in the family bible and in his will. See New Jersey Archives - Wills.

Edward and Sarah's wills and will extracts do nothing but confuse the reader. It's possible the transcriptions are in error, we need to see the original documents, not transcriptions.

In Proceedings, constitution, by-laws, list of members, &c., of the Surveyors' Association of West New Jersey : with historical and briographical sketches, published by the Society in 1880 the author states of Edward Andrews, "his will names 6 children, Samuel, Jacob, Peter, Alice, Edith and Elizabeth".

Sarah Ong Andrews' will extract, rife old-time spelling errors:

"will of. Wife Sarah; children--Samewell, Jacob, Petter, all under age; three daughters, one called Elizabeth. Home farm and a mill, incl. 50 acres of meadow, bought of brother Mordica; personal property. Executors--the wife and Thomas Ridgawa, with Richard Orsborn and brother-in-law, Jacob Onge, as assistants. Witnesses--Preserve Brown and William Cramer. Proved 09 Apr 1717. Lib. 2, p. 69 01 Feb 1716-7 Inventory of the personal estate, £330.5.2 3/4, incl. book debts, £163.12.4 3/4, made by William Cramer and Gervas Pharo. "

Sarah's will was signed 1732, but probated in 1773 (?), and then names Nehemiah, Isaac (supposedly born after Edward made his Will), Hannah Parker, Sarah Cramer and grandson Jacob Ridgway. If there were 3 daughters and one as Elizabeth, there's no room for an Alice--more confusion.

Conclusion: Edward's brother Mordecai's Will clearly states Alice Mathews (Alice Andrews Higbee Mathis as his (Mordecai's) daughter. If Edward did have a daughter Alice, it was not likely Alice Andrews Higbee Mathis.
