DEATH BRINGS RELIEF TO "AUNT" SARAH ORTON
After an illness of about nine weeks, death resulting from general debility brought relief to Sarah Taylor Orton, familiarly known to practically the entire community as "Aunt" Sarah, on Tuesday morning of this week at about 10:15. As the end was not unexpected, her three daughters were with her, as they have been most of the time during her illness, to do all within human power to relieve her suffering and minister to her every want. Perfectly rational until the end came, she nevertheless suffered considerably during the last few days so that death was truly a relief.
Born in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, England, on October 22, 1842, the daughter of George and Mary Smith Taylor, she came to America with her mother and other members of the family when she was 18 years of age, her father and her brother Thomas having come a year earlier. They came to Parowan when she was 21 years old and in October of the next year she was married to Alexander Orton. Since that time she has resided continuously in this city. She was the mother of six children, a boy and five girls, three of whom, together with her husband, parents, two brothers and a sister, have preceededed her to the better life.
Surviving her are her daughters Ellen, Ada, and Hannah, her sister Mrs. Hannah Mickleson, and several grand and great grand children. During her lifetime she was a devoted member of the "Mormon" church, and for many years was one of the Relief Society teachers. Recently she was awarded a prize for being the oldest active member of the Relief Society here, being at that time over eighty-two years old.
Funeral services were held for her this afternoon in the Tabernacle with Bishop Marsden presiding. The speakers were John P. Orton, H.L. Adams, S.A. Matheson, John W. Bentley and Bishop Marsden, all of whom spoke in terms of praise for the splendid life and character of the departed one. The singing was furnished by members of the choirs of both wards conducted by L.J. Adams. Special numbers were a quartet by Messrs. W. Clair Rowley and Rex Ward, Mrs. Glenna Ward and Mrs. Ida Burton. The opening prayer was offered by Mr. Anthony Paxton and the closing one by David Matheson.
