About Sarah Ann Uzzell Branch
Sarah Uzzell was born to Elisha and Ann Uzzell on July 18, 1819, somewhere in Tennessee. On the evening of June 18, 1840, she married James Goode Branch in Maury County, Tennessee. In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for District 25, Maury County, Tennessee, Sarah, 32, and James, 38, were living with them are their children Reuben, 8, Nancy, 3, and James, 11 months old. James Goode Branch was listed as a farmer born in Virginia, and the value of his real estate was $800.
In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Sarah and her family were living in District 4, Maury County, Tennessee. She was listed as being 37 years old, her husband James Goode Branch, 47, and he was still working as afarmer with real estate valued at $3,500 and a personal estate of $425. Their children living with them were Reuben E.J., 18, James A.W., 12, William T.M., 10, Nancy T.D., 13, Mary A.E., 5, Emma M., 2, and John F.P., 6.
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Sarah and her family were still living in District 4, Maury County, Tennessee. She was listed as being 51 years old, and her husband James Goode Branch, 56, and he was still farming with real estate valued at $2,000 and a personal estate of $1,900. Their children living with them were Nancy, 22, James A., 21, William, 19, John T., 17, Mary A., 15, Emma M., 13, and Jefferson Beauregard, 9. Next door is their oldest son, Reuben, 28, also farming and living with his wife, Elizabeth, 28, and their two children, Sallie A., 3, and Etta O., 1.
In another census record for August 25, 1870, it appears that Sarah's daughter Nancy was living in Civil District 19, Rutherford Post Office, Gibson County, Tennessee with her husband, John. Nancy, 23, and John, 35, were living with two children, Liza Coker, 10, and Colonel Coker, 7. Maybe these were children of a former marriage of John Coker, because Nancy would have been only 13 years old when Liza was born. However, this may not have been the correct census record for Nancy, because in 1880 she was living with her widowed mother, and siblings, so I'm not sure about this record. However, in the 1920 census records, Nancy Coker was living with her brother, John Branch.
By 1880, James Goode Branch had passed away, on January 20, 1873, and was buried in the Branch Cemetery on the Aubray Smithson farm in Glendale, Maury County, Tennessee, and Sarah, who was 60 years old, was living in District 25, Maury County, Tennessee, with her children, Nancy, 28, John F., 24, Mary A., 22, Emma M., 20, and Jefferson B., 18. Sarah was keeping house, as was Nancy, Mary and Emma, and John and Jefferson were farmers.
By 1900, Sarah, 80, was living with two of her children in Civil District 4, Maury County, Tennessee, Jefferson, 38, his wife, Johnnie B., 27, and sister Emma M., 41. Jeff and Johnnie had been married for 7 years but had no children. Jeff was renting his farm property and working as a farmer. In the same census, 1900, for Civil District 15, Giles County, Sarah's daughter, Nancy, 53, was married to John Coker, 78. They had been married for 20 years, but have no children. John was still working as a farmer.
Sarah passed away on December 6, 1904, and was buried in the Branch Cemetery on the Aubray Smithson Farm in Glendale, Maury County, Tennessee, along with her husband.
In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census for Civil District 4, Park Station Precinct, Maury County, Tennessee, John P. Branch and his sister Nancy T. , are 66 and 73 years old, and are living on a farm located on Howard Bridge Road which they own free of a mortgage. John is still working as a farmer.
Nancy passed away on December 6, 1930, in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, at the age of 83. Her birth date was shown as March 30, 1847, in Maury, Tennessee, and her parents were Sara Uzzell and James G. Branch of Virginia. Her death certificates stated that her cause of death was general debility, paralysis and that she was "insane", which probably meant she had dementia. At the time of her death she was a widow, and the informant on her death certificate appears to be J.B. Branch of Columbia, Tennessee, (probably her brother, Jefferson Beauregard) and she was scheduled to be buried in the Family Lot on December 7, 1930.
