Sarah Bartholomew

Sarah was born February 21, 1738, died April 10, 1801, daughter of Squire Hezekiah and Sarah (Newell) Gridley. Jacob, son of Abraham Bartholomew, was born in Branford, Connecticut, January 9, 1736-37. He was a farmer, and in addition conducted other business enterprises successfully, and served his country well both in times of peace and war. He became a tanner by trade, and carried on his business at the Edward Barnes place on Peaceable street. In turn he became proprietor of "Bartlemy Tavern," with which was connected a store. At the organization of the town of Bristol in 1785, he was elected its first treasurer and surveyor of highways. He served the town in several other capacities, and also served in the revolutionary war. While nursing his brother John, who as a revolutionary soldier died on board the government hospital ship in New York harbor(1776), he contracted a fever which affected his health, and he died October 29, 1805. He had formerly enjoyed fine health.
