About Sarah Mary Ann Cheville

Birth: 1838, England Death: 1886 Colo Story County Iowa, USA
Sarah married William on April 13, 1861 in Ely, Cambridgeshire county, England. Their son William was born in Ely.
In May 1867 they traveled to New York on the "City of Cork" steam ship, arriving at Ellis Island on April 30th. Sarah was pregnant on the journey, it must have been a difficult journey for her. They made their way to Guelph, Ontario Canada, where their second son George was born, on July 4th. They had 2 more children while living in Ontario. They moved to Sherman Township, Story county Iowa when George was 12. Sherman Township is today known as Colo.
Her mother-in-law came from England to live with William and Sarah in 1883. After William's death, Sarah and her mother-in-law moved to Marshalltown.
________________________________________________ Sarah's maiden name gives much confusion among her descendants. There are 3 versions:
1. A letter from Cheville relatives in England says William married Sarah Ann Potentine in Ely in 1861. (I did find a marriage certificate for William Cheville who married Sarah A Potentine in Ely in April 1861.) 2. A Scarrow descendant says, without providing proof, that a Sarah Ann Nelson, born in Canada, married her first cousin, William Cheville and they lived in Sherman Township in Story county, IA. 3. Mary Ellen's death certificate says her mother's name was "Sarah N. Knight, born in England". But, Mary's death certificate also states she was never married, and we know that to be false.
There is a possibility William was married more than once. Because of the gap in ages of the children, a remarriage would explain the length of time between some of the children. The multiple names of the mother(s) can be due to poor hearing, bad spelling, poor handwriting, poor memory or, as has happened in other cases, the maiden name of the mother was given instead of the father's last name.
I don't think Sarah Nelson is a possibility. Various records of William's children state their mother was born in England, Sarah Nelson was born in Canada. It is possible the Scarrow descendant has mixed up this William Cheville with a different William Cheville... there are a few men sharing this name among our ancestors.
What we do know, William had 5 children. William, Jr., George, Hezziekiah, Martha and Mary E. The mother(s) are up for interpretation.
