---------------------------------

Her parents are NOT KNOWN. Her maiden name is not Savage and also is not Colton. She may be Sarah Tremaine, but we have no proof at this time. Please be careful when you do merges.

Children of Sarah (possibly Tremaine) and Benjamin Cooley

  1. Bethia Cooley b. 16 Sep 1643
  2. Obadiah Cooley b. 27 Jan 1646/47
  3. Eliakim Cooley+ b. 8 Jan 1648/49
  4. Daniel Cooley+ b. 2 May 1651, d. 9 Feb 1727
  5. Sarah Cooley b. 27 Feb 1653/54
  6. Benjamin Cooley II b. 1 Sep 1656
  7. Mary Cooley b. 22 Jun 1659
  8. Joseph Cooley+ b. 6 Mar 1661/62, d. 20 May 1740

The maiden name Tremaine is not supported by any hard data as far as I know. Sarah has been erroneously linked in the past to the Savage family due to a citation (Savage) being mistaken for a maiden name.

Sarah Colton, wife of Benj. Cooley? The New England historical and genealogical register, Volume 34, By Henry Fritz-Gilbert Waters, New England Historic Genealogical Society, p. 266 1st Generation. Benjamin Cooley appears to have been one of the first settlers in that part of Springfield called Longmeadow, and from whom descended all of that name in the country, as far as is known. His wife's name was Sarah. The time and place of their marriage is not known. Their children as recorded were-Bethiah, born Sept. 16, 1643. died Dec. 9. 1711. Obediah. born Sept. 27, 1646, died Sept. 3, 1690. Elakin, bom Jan. 8, 1648, died Dec. 1, 1711. Daniel, born May 2, 1651, died Feb. 9. 1727. Sarah, born Feb. 27, 1653. Benjamin, born Sept. 1, 1656, died Nov. 29, 1731. Mary, born June 22, 1659. Joseph, born March 6, 1661, died May 20, 1740. The families of the sons are hereafter in this book recorded. Bethiah was married to Henry Chapin, Dec. 5, 1664. Sarah married Jonathan Morgan, Jan. 5, 1679. Mary married Thomas Terry. April 21, 1687. Benjamin Cooley the father died Aug. 17, 1684. Sarah his wife died Aug. 23, 1684. 1 st Generation. George Colton [page 48], known in the record by the title of Quartermaster, from whom descended all of the Coltons in this country so far as known, is said to have come from a town in England, called Suttan Coldfield. Came first to Windsor, married Deborah Gardner, of Hartford, and was one of the first settlers in that part of Springfield called Longmeadow. Some have suggested that George was accompanied from England by his sister Sarah Colton, who then married Benj. Cooley. The history of Enfield, Connecticut by Francis Olcott Allen, John Chauncey Pease notes that Benjamin Cooley and George Colton were closely assocciated in their business transactions and their families lived quite close to one another.

  • Jan. 9, 1662, George Colton and Benjamin Cooley granted 30 acres each between Freshwater and Grapebrooks if they build and settle there in five years from date. VoL l. p. 45
  • Feb. 8, 1663, George Colton and Benjamin Cooley granted 10 acres each of meadow "in ye woods beyond Freshwater east of Pequitt Path.Vol.1 p. 50
  • Feb. 8, 1663, George Colton and Benjamin Cooley and Nathaniel Eby granted 30 acres each at "fresh water east of Pequitt Path." "These 3 parcels of land 30 & 30 & 30 acres are Ensign Cooleys."- Vo1.1., p.50
  • Oct. 8, 1660, John Pynchon, Geo. Colton and Benjamin Cooley granted 40 acres to keep swine on at Freshwater brook. "This was carryed on till windsor corne eate up the swine." Springfield, Vol 1, p. 35. Conversely, Benjamin could not have been married to Sarah Savage, whose parents were Thomas Savage and Hannah Tyng, because the Savages married after Sarah's birthdate and her marriage to Benj. Cooley in about 1842. See Major Thomas Savage of Boston and his descendants, by Lawrence Park pp 8-9.
