OBIT: Mrs. Sarah Shipman, formerly Mrs. Oscar Sayles, aged 89, and for more than a half century a resident of Ellensburg and the Kittitas Valley, died in a sanitarium in Seattle, Sunday morning. She had been away from here about a year but had been ill 19 months. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 3 o'clock from the Green Lake Funeral Parlors, Seattle. She leaves four living children, Mrs. Annie Poland of Ellensburg, Roy Sayles of Seattle, Mrs. Alta Newman of Seattle and Chester M. Sayles of San Francisco. A daughter-in-law, Mrs. George Sayles and grandchildren live here. She was born in Illinois and married Oscar Sayles, an Illinois farmer, who crossed the plains in a wagon train, first to the Grande Ronde Valley in Oregon and later to Olympia. Her father was a captain in the Civil War and a brother, Jess T. Mills, was a member of the state board of control under Governor McBride and also sheriff of Thurston County. Mr. and Mrs. Sayles moved to the Kittitas Valley in the early 1880s and most of their children were born here. Later Mr. Sayles died and she married A. M. Shipman, who died several years ago. She lived on Capital Avenue, near the city limits. She died on 5 Jan 1941 in Seattle, King, WA. She was the wife of #1-Oscar Sayles (1843-1915) and #2-Alvin Marsden Shipman (1855-1935)
